Proper 23

Matthew 22.1-14

Context

Thankfulness for the successful in-gathering and storage of crops at the end of the growing season is appropriately marked by thanksgiving to God, whether in a British harvest festival or the Jewish feast of Sukkot. Festivals are characterised by feasts and today’s readings, featuring feasting and sharing, while affording a variety of explorations, which help us to set all our considerations in the context of a faithful response to God’s abundance.

Common thread: Invitation to the feast (Matthew 22.1-14)

The focus this week across the ROOTS resources – for adults, all ages together, children and young people – is on the impact of a response to God’s abundant provision through a Gospel parable about feasting. This week’s Fruits of the Spirit are joy and kindness.

An alternative thread for adults draws from Philippians and looks at reconciliation.

These resources were first published in 2008.
