This passage takes place when Mary found she was pregnant and went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was already pregnant with a baby who would become John the Baptist. Mary and Elizabeth greet each other with blessings and then Mary praises God for the blessings she has received. There must have been something very special about Mary’s greeting as Luke mentions it three times.
Blessings – even if we are not quite sure exactly what it means in all the contexts in which we might use the word – are very much still with us, and associated with comings and goings, greetings and partings.
This week we explore exchanging signs of greeting and blessing.
