Advent 4

Luke 1.39-45(46-55)

The big story Week 4 of 5

A time in which we accept Luke’s invitation to be caught up in the big story of God’s creation and redemption of the world.

Turning the world upside down

The Gospel story, Luke 1.39-45,(46-55), that we hear on this last week of Advent, with Christmas almost upon us, is revolutionary. It shows the relationship of Mary and Elizabeth turning social norms on their head and, when we read Mary’s song carefully, we find its values unconventional, even today.

This week provides an opportunity to:

  • learn about the nature of social status in the community about which Luke is writing (AAA and CYP)
  • explore the signicance of blessing in the Old Testament and contemporary society (AAA and CYP)
  • recognise the radical nature of the Magnicat (Mary’s song) (AAA)
  • become familiar with the Song of Mary, the Magnificat. (CYP)

These resources were first published in Issue 62 November/December 2012.
