Advent 2

Isaiah 11.1-10

Images for all time - Week 2 of 5

An opportunity to discover metaphors in Isaiah and the Christmas gospels that reflect human experience, then and now.

A child shall lead them

During Advent, as we anticipate the coming of Jesus, we read from the Book of Isaiah ancient prophecies written for the people of Judah in which Christians have found images that shed light on the coming of the Messiah. This week we read of fresh shoots growing out of a tree stump and a series of unlikely events that indicate how extraordinary the kingdom of God might be.

This week’s reading, Isaiah 11.1-10, provides an opportunity to:

  • engage with the distinctive nature of the Advent season (AAA & CYP)
  • identify Isaiah’s vision of a people with a shared heritage descended from Jesse (AAA & CYP)
  • wonder how Isaiah’s radical vision for inclusion and justice might be expressed today. (AAA)
  • celebrate the place of the child (CYP)
