Advent 4

Isaiah 7.10-16

Images for all time - Week 4 of 5

An opportunity to discover metaphors in Isaiah and the Christmas gospels that reflect human experience, then and now.

Name him Immanuel

During Advent, as we anticipate the coming of Jesus, we read from the Book of Isaiah ancient prophecies written for the people of Judah in which Christians have found images that shed light on the coming of the Messiah. On the final Sunday of Advent, in Isaiah 7.10-16, we encounter a metaphor that conveyed a message about time to its original hearers. It speaks to us today of the meaning of Jesus’ coming in his name, Immanuel, 'God with us'.

This week’s reading provides an opportunity to:

  • engage with the distinctive nature of the Advent season (AAA; CYP)
  • consider what it means to say that God is with us (AAA; CYP)
  • think about names (AAA & CYP)
  • explore the images of time within the reading. (AAA)
