Brief account of the later life of the apostle John, and of the importance he attached to Jesus' teaching to 'Love one another'
Early accounts of the life of John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, tell stories of how he came to be Bishop of Ephesus. He lived to a great age, and was the last of the apostles to die.
When he eventually grew too old and frail to talk to the people from the front of the church, standing up, some men from the congregation would carry him and place him on a chair where everyone could see him. Then the Elders would ask him to give a message to all those who had come to hear him. 'Love one another', were the only words he would utter. They would ask him again if he had anything else to pass on to those first-century Christians. 'Love one another', he would repeat firmly, with great conviction.
