Proper 26

Mark 12.28-34

Context

November begins and as we are caught between the fast-approaching season of Advent and the Ordinary Time continuous reading of Mark’s Gospel, we are bidden to consider the kingdom. We are also assailed by many opportunities, in the next few weeks, to remember: All Saints, All Souls, the Fallen, even Guy Fawkes.

Common thread – Now and forever (Mark 12.28-34)

As the pressure on him mounts, Jesus speaks of the Great Commandment as a way to the kingdom.  His teaching draws upon his Jewish heritage, encouraging us to look beyond merely earthly matters to glimpse something of God’s perspective. When we do, we are forced to choose: in the light of the kingdom, how do we live now?

An alternative thread for adults, Lifegiving ritual, is drawn from Hebrews 9.11-14.
