Proper 27

Mark 12.38-44

Context

As we approach the end of the Christian year, Jesus’ teaching ministry described in Mark’s Gospel moves more urgently towards the  inauguration of the kingdom. Last week Jesus was reminding people to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, strength. Now he moves to a simple concrete example.

Common thread – Giving our all (Mark 12.38-44)

At the end of chapter 12, Jesus moves abruptly from theoretical theological discussion to a stark concrete example. But he draws, nevertheless, on traditional Jewish teaching. The story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath demonstrates God’s generous provision for even the most helpless of society, enabling them to respond with generosity to others. When we wonder how much of ourselves to give to God, we need to remember how generously God has first given to us. An alternative thread for adults, Nothing more to be done is drawn from Hebrews 9.24-28.
